Mirrors

With less than furtive glances, Jack watched his new assistant. So different from Serena, like mirror images on a flimsy strip of negative. There was an earnestness to this one, a puppy-waiting-to-be-rewarded-for-not-shi tting-on-the-carpet look of expectation on her face.

Ten years ago, he might have found her dewy-eyed regard appealing enough to make the effort to dazzle her into his bedroom, but now it seemed more work than it was worth.

Still, it was nice to see Alex's brown eyes filled with blurry admiration.

Not like before.

Not like that artic blue gaze, filled with disappointment, filled with hurt, reflecting back the sad truth of who he had become.
